The Shape of Holding Multitudes

2025 - Present

Inspired by Walt Whitman's declaration, “I contain multitudes,” this ongoing series explores the complexity of being human—the contradictions, experiences, and shifting identities that coexist within us.

Through layers of color, intuitive gesture, and atmospheric passages, the paintings investigate multiplicity not as fragmentation, but as a condition of wholeness.

As the series has evolved, dense, heavily worked surfaces have given way to greater openness and expansiveness. Recent works on large, unstretched canvases extend this exploration, allowing gesture, movement, and the physical character of the material to become increasingly integral to the paintings.

Each work exists as an individual expression while remaining part of a larger conversation. Together, they reflect the many ways we hold, release, change, and become.

The series continues to evolve, embracing the idea that wholeness need not be seamless.

Origin of The Series

These early works mark the beginning of the ideas that would later develop into The Shape of Holding Multitudes series. Created while the conceptual framework was still emerging, they explore the first gestures toward multiplicity, atmosphere, and interior landscape.
