About

I build atmospheres that hold us long enough to experience what words cannot.

Painting has always been a language for me—a way of understanding experiences I don't always have words for. I build atmospheres from memory, emotion, sensation, and the fleeting moments that stay with us: a sense of belonging, an uneasiness we can't quite place, the strange familiarity of feeling as though we've been somewhere before.

Through intuitive gesture, layered color, translucent veils, and passages of both density and openness, I create spaces meant to be experienced rather than simply observed. Marks emerge and disappear. Earlier layers remain present beneath the surface. Gravity, water, and chance become part of the painting, while quieter passages allow room for the work—and the viewer—to breathe.

I'm less interested in telling you what a painting means than in creating the conditions for recognition. What you find there may be entirely different from what I brought to it. A color, gesture, or atmosphere might awaken a memory, emotion, or sense of something you can't fully name.

For me, that's where the painting becomes complete: when it stops being only my experience and becomes a place for yours.

I paint to stay awake.
To honor what’s invisible but deeply felt.
To hold space for emotion in a noisy world.
To invite others into a quiet, shared experience.
To create places where people can breathe, recognize themselves, and feel seen.

Hi, I’m Kat Collins.

I'm an abstract painter based in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. Painting is how I listen—to myself, to the world around me, and to the things that are felt before they can be named.

My work grows through an intuitive process of layering, obscuring, revealing, and responding. I rarely know exactly where a painting is going when I begin. I follow what emerges, allowing color, gesture, water, gravity, and quiet to lead me toward an atmosphere that feels alive.

Across different bodies of work, I've explored twilight, resilience, grief and compassion, water, remembered landscapes, and most recently Walt Whitman's idea of multiplicity. The subjects change, but the impulse remains: to create paintings that become places we can enter and experience.

My work has been exhibited regionally, collected across the United States, and featured in contemporary art publications. I'm currently developing new large-scale paintings and continuing to explore how atmosphere, memory, and multiplicity can be experienced through abstraction.

My process begins with instinctive mark-making—raw, unfiltered movement—before gradually softening into atmosphere. I build layers that blur, dissolve, and re-emerge, letting intuition and energy guide me toward an atmosphere that feels inhabited rather than imposed.
