Beyond The Familiar
An Intimate Mentoring Retreat for Artists Seeking Clarity, Direction & Creative Growth
November 21–22, 2026 · Emmaus, Pennsylvania
You've developed your skills. You've made the work. But perhaps you're beginning to wonder what comes next.
Maybe your work feels too familiar. Maybe you're sensing a shift you can't quite articulate. Or perhaps you're making work you feel good about, but you're ready to examine it more deeply.
Beyond the Familiar is an intimate, two-day mentoring retreat for practicing artists ready to step away from familiar routines, engage in meaningful artistic dialogue, and explore new possibilities within their creative practice.
Through facilitated group critiques, thoughtful conversation, individualized mentoring, and guided experimentation, we'll explore not just what you're making, but why—and where your work might be leading you.
This isn't about learning to paint like someone else.
It's about understanding what makes your work distinctly yours and discovering where it might go next.

A Different Kind of Artist Retreat
Beyond the Familiar isn't a traditional painting workshop.
You won't spend two days following demonstrations or working toward a finished painting. Instead, we'll create space to examine your artistic practice more deeply.
With just four artists, we'll spend time looking closely at one another's work, exploring creative intentions, questioning familiar approaches, and engaging in the kind of thoughtful critique that's often missing from an independent studio practice.
There will be opportunities for hands-on experimentation, but the emphasis is on artistic discovery rather than production.
You'll be encouraged to question, reflect, take risks, and explore what may be emerging in your work.
Not to abandon what you've already developed, but to recognize what is authentically yours—and what might be holding you back.
Who is this for?
Beyond the Familiar is designed for intermediate-to-advanced visual artists who have an established creative practice and are seeking greater clarity, direction, or depth in their work.
You may find yourself:
Feeling that your work has become repetitive or overly familiar.
Sensing a new direction emerging but struggling to understand or pursue it.
Questioning your artistic identity, intentions, or creative decisions.
Wanting to move beyond technical accomplishment toward more meaningful expression.
Seeking thoughtful, constructive critique and serious artistic conversation.
Ready to challenge familiar habits and explore new possibilities.
You don't need gallery representation, an exhibition history, or a professional art career to participate.
You do need an existing body of work, experience working independently, and a willingness to engage openly with your own practice and the work of others.
Artists working in different styles and approaches are welcome. You do not need to be an abstract painter.
The Two Day Experience
-
Saturday, November 21 | 10 AM–4 PM
We'll begin by looking closely at the work each artist brings to the retreat.
Through facilitated group critiques, we'll explore recurring themes, visual language, artistic intentions, strengths, and unresolved questions.
Rather than offering quick judgments or prescriptive solutions, we'll engage in thoughtful conversation designed to help each artist recognize what's happening within their work.
In the afternoon, we'll move into guided experimentation, using simple exercises to challenge familiar approaches and explore unexpected possibilities.
The emphasis is on curiosity, discovery, and becoming more conscious of the decisions we make as artists.
-
Sunday, November 22 | 10 AM–4 PM
Building on the discoveries and conversations from Day One, we'll explore the questions that feel most relevant to each artist's practice.
Through individualized studio experimentation, mentoring, and continued group dialogue, you'll have an opportunity to investigate new directions and consider what deserves further exploration.
We'll conclude by identifying meaningful questions, possibilities, and next steps for your continued artistic development.
The goal isn't to leave with finished paintings or definitive answers.
It's to leave with a deeper understanding of your work and a clearer sense of what you want to explore next.
